AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Moorgate? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off then keep the ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine pulls it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Moorgate. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Moorgate: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Call right where you are. Say a BB2 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting your car even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Heys Court.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

The staff working at any Moorgate filling station — the Texaco among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. No part in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was intended to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from. A motor topped up on a drive in Hollin Bank overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

After it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A car left sitting in Moorgate with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Moorgate

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole fault. Blended into the diesel and left unused, it's harmless at that stage; using the motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. Whether the vehicle sits in Longshaw or the heart of Moorgate, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever around Lancashire the vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Moorgate: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Meadowhead Junior School the refill is rushed. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Crediton Close. Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Brown Cow, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor in a home with one of each fuels. Wherever you're in Moorgate or the rest of Lancashire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Moorgate?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Fernhurst Wood, perhaps, or midway across Moorgate. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M65, under a mile from Moorgate, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Preston, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Moorgate to the car park by Ewood Park. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's caught quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Moorgate: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Moorgate — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street by Jack Walker Memorial Statue — the van travels to your vehicle. The work depends on three replies, which we get first — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if the engine has run.

Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. Next, the filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your car. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Finally, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Mill Hill (Lancs) or on a driveway around Moorgate. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we leave. Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Moorgate?

Because the jobs differ, a flat figure would not be honest. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Thwaites Empire Theatre.

What was put in, how much, and if it ran: each Moorgate enquiry opens by asking exactly that, ahead of any quote, not after. Those replies narrow the range down to a single figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
