Moortown: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. Usually, if your engine has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is in Moortown. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Moortown and Ringwood carry, with diesel feeding the motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There is a filler on every tank. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in the gap that the error lives.

How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Moortown

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Moortown Lane, perhaps outside The Railway on the way home that evening.

New-to-you vehicles are next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on. Whether it happens in The Holdings or the middle of Moortown, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Moortown

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Moortown forecourt or a drive out in North Kingston, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Hinton Admiral? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Meadowlands, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly through its own spout.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Never go on to step five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Moortown?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump. If you're on your own driveway around Moortown, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over safely then switch the car off. Moortown sits under 15 miles from the M27; on it, use the next junction. A short hop across Moortown is a smaller job than a run towards Salisbury, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Moortown: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Ringwood Junior School, near David Lloyd Ringwood or on your own drive, the van travels to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system. More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left. A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. Before we go, we fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
