Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mount Pleasant

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump begins pulling it. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car stands around Mount Pleasant. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mount Pleasant: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • Call just where you are. Say a WF17 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't:

  • Shifting the car even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way down Alpine Close.
  • Draining that tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you're at a forecourt in Mount Pleasant, whether it is the Tesco or somewhere else. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the pickup draws from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Lamplands last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out. A car left sitting in Mount Pleasant with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Staincliffe or the middle of Mount Pleasant.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere in West Yorkshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mount Pleasant: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The refill is hurried outside Purlwell Infant and Nursery School, because your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Denison Street. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The West End, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types. Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same mistake, wherever around Mount Pleasant or the rest of West Yorkshire you happen to be.

Mount Pleasant: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might appear, maybe part way across Mount Pleasant or coming back from Batley Cricket Club. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off rather than restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M62, under 3 miles from Mount Pleasant, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Mount Pleasant to the car park by Madina Masjid is one matter; heading for Wakefield, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where the car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it is noticed soon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Mount Pleasant

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Mount Pleasant: a side street close to Madressa Islamiyah (Old Madressah), a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the work, so before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly what quantity, and if your engine has run.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Testing your car follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, where needed, swapped. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Finally, your system is bled with new diesel. You set off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Mount Pleasant or in a bay at Batley. The test before we leave is that it runs properly on new diesel. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

Mount Pleasant: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be honest. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind St Andrew.

For that reason, each call from Mount Pleasant opens by asking the same trio — what was put in, what quantity, whether it ran — ahead of any figure. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
