Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Mount Sion and Moss carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between them.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Mount Sion?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Blast Road before work, or in the car park outside Clayton Arms heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. Brymbo or the middle of Mount Sion: it takes the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Brynteg or a forecourt around Mount Sion, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show what belongs in which filler just there.
  • Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Gwersyllt.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Wrexham that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Argoed, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • The two under a single flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Skip stage five altogether.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Mount Sion?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your engine. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Asda or anywhere else. At home in Mount Sion? So the vehicle stays put.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off. On the M53, under 15 miles from Mount Sion, that means the next junction. About how far did it go? Hopping across Mount Sion is less work than a trip of under 5 miles towards Wrexham, and so tell us.

What happens when we arrive around Mount Sion

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside the local primary school, near Stori Brymbo or at home, our van travels to it. Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because the replies decide both work and price. During the phone call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Next we fire it up and check it runs smoothly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
