AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mountain Hare? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands around Mountain Hare. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mountain Hare: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting CF47 0, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's pointless.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along Mardy Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Moving your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Mountain Hare forecourt you are on, the Applegreen included. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A car filled on a drive in Ffos-y-fran overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning in Mountain Hare makes it worse. Inside that tank only, waiting does nothing. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Mountain Hare

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the whole issue. Blended through your diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless at that stage; running your engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Penyard or the heart of Mountain Hare equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Merthyr Tydfil.

Mountain Hare: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. No one means it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. Someone pours the bottle in at home, right off A4060, as the day ends. One more pattern: darkness, the car park by The Farmers Arms, and someone using that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, company cars, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Mountain Hare or the rest of Merthyr Tydfil you happen to be.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mountain Hare?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Thomastown Park, perhaps, or part way across Mountain Hare. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Mountain Hare, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

A quick hop across Mountain Hare to the car park by Greenwood Close Community Building is one matter; driving towards Newport, under 25 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been run. When it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Mountain Hare: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street by Twyn Community Hub, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest in Mountain Hare, we come to it. Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about what quantity, and whether the engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is emptied, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains won't flush out unaided. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. You head off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Mountain Hare or in a bay at Merthyr Tydfil. It's tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs properly before our engineers head off. No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mountain Hare: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Sir W.T. Lewis.

What was put in, how much, and if the engine ran: each Mountain Hare enquiry opens with exactly those, before any figure, never afterwards. When those are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
