Mountpleasant: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?
Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Mountpleasant. Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains why it happens and what to stop it happening at all.
AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank
Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Mountpleasant and Thurso carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.
Each tank has its own filler. Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.
How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Mountpleasant
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.
To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Park Avenue, or at Grove Lounge on the way home after work.
The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new motor.
A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, carries on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Mountpleasant or out in Springpark.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Mountvernon or a forecourt in Mountpleasant.
- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — from Thurso's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
Wherever across Highland the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Mount Pleasant Road.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.
- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.
- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through the built-in spout.
- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.
Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there. Step five stays off limits.
Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mountpleasant already?
Brief order, then. Top of that: the motor remains off. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.
On a forecourt — Gleaner, Gulf or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Mountpleasant.
Where your motor has been run already, pull over safely and turn it off. Come off the M90 — over 50 miles out of Mountpleasant — at the first junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Inverness, over 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Mountpleasant.
What occurs when we turn up in Mountpleasant
The van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside The Toll Gallery, or by the local primary school. Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set the work and price. During the call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of anything else.
Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. After your filter is flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle is tested. After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.
Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Your car stays where it is. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Sir George's Park, a side street close to Old St Peter's Kirk: our engineers drain it where it sits. Tricky to pin down, like the back of Old St. Peter's Kirk? By a border? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.
