What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Mumps

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: if your motor has run since it went in. Anywhere your vehicle stands — Townfield, Mumps — never run a motor that has not been started yet. Ring 0333 366 0103 with the key and motor both off. In Mumps, such a case is generally drained and cleaned on the spot. Already run? Stop once you safely can, then turn it off. It is a bigger job, though step one does not change.

Match what happened to one of the ones below, anywhere in Greater Manchester you happen to be.

On a Mumps forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Picture it: standing by the petrol pump, holding the nozzle, you spot the cap you took off was not the correct one. Somewhere in Mumps, then — Tesco, Texaco, or anywhere else nearby.

What it means: this is the best place to find out. Still in the tank, with nothing pulled through: that is where the AdBlue is.

Next: avoid the temptation to fire it up just to move away from the pump. A few jobs: a shove into a space with the staff assisting, the bottle kept, and a ring to us from the forecourt. Emptying it there at the petrol pump is possible when it can't be shifted, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

At home in Mumps with AdBlue in the diesel tank

Days had passed with the warning light on. Only by the recycling, the empty container in hand, did you glance back at the cap you had used on the driveway. Homes just off Bridgewater Street get hit as much as everywhere else.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue stay apart: the AdBlue drops to the base of your tank and stays there, no matter how long it waits.

Next: prevent any early-morning move by putting your keys in the house, then ring us. Your driveway is where it gets drained, be it in Mumps or Lower Moor. Late-night empties beside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Mumps?

Rough running, smoke, falling power or a lit dashboard started a mile or two after the fill. Egerton Street, say, or the route to Manchester — a trip of under 10 miles.

The upshot: the system has drawn AdBlue through by now. It has been through the filter and your lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure pump and your injectors. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Stop safely — that is the next job — then turn everything off. Mumps lies under 3 miles from the Broadway; there, pull off at the first junction instead of pushing on to the services. Don't restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Call, saying how far the vehicle went.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It's a car you have had for a week. On your own car, AdBlue is missing or elsewhere. On this one, the inlet is right next to your diesel inlet — news to you. Throughout Greater Manchester, nobody is safe from it.

Meaning? Whatever applies above applies too — run or not — and one extra step. Many rental and fleet agreements need the owner's approval before work.

Next: ring the hire company or the fleet manager first, then us — settling it before our arrival is quicker. Leave the car switched off while the answer comes, even if you're waiting at Mills Hill or near St Stephen & All Martyrs.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Mumps?

"I think so" is often the most honest answer there is. Which cap was taken off, you cannot recall; meanwhile the bottle weighs lighter than it ought to, and ammonia lingers by the filler. Maybe at a friend's driveway in Cold Hurst Hollow, or in a rush outside Beever Primary School on the school run.

Meaning? Spills around the filler don't reach the engine at all. A diesel tank with AdBlue inside is a different matter. You can't tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so would suck in any AdBlue that is in your tank.

Assume it got in, and don't turn the key. Describe what you noticed on your phone. A clean tank looked at is a better outcome than a run one emptied.

The common ground in each Mumps AdBlue drain

Every case gets the same start to the job. Three questions are asked when our engineers arrive — on a forecourt, a drive, a street by Mahdlo or the car park at Boltmakers Rest: the fluid, the quantity, and if it has been started. Those answers settle the work, and you hear the price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain metals in fuel systems, and so it does not rinse out unaided; that's why the flush, after the drain, matters much more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

Last, our technicians fire it up. Our test that it runs properly on fresh diesel comes before our technicians leave. We do the entire job where your car is, and permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon. Payment comes on the day, never in advance. For your insurer, you get a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. Worth knowing: lots of insurers offer misfuelling cover, so a check of your documents while you wait pays.
