AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Musselburgh? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble begins once it is pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Musselburgh, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Musselburgh: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Remove your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and about how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Call just where you are. Say a EH21 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along Kilwinning Street.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Musselburgh forecourt — the Tesco included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, which is why a car filled in Pinkie yesterday and never started stays the straightforward one, as long as no one touches your key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car parked around Musselburgh. Just in the tank, it stays stable. Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and this problem is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Musselburgh or out in Stoneyhill Steading, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in your tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere the car has stopped around East Lothian.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Musselburgh

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may look identical. Nobody means it. Mostly it is not the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Kilwinning Place. Otherwise, after dark by Coach & Horses, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels. Anywhere around East Lothian, Musselburgh as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Musselburgh?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. It's been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Musselburgh Sports Centre, say, or part way across Musselburgh. When safe, pull over and switch it off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M8, under 15 miles from Musselburgh, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Musselburgh to the car park by Musselburgh Museum is a very different job from a run towards Edinburgh, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Spotted soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Musselburgh: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road near Musselburgh Town House, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Musselburgh, and the van travels to it. Before anything else we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those replies decide this work.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't clear out by itself. Testing the vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, replaced. Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a drive around Musselburgh. It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave. We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Musselburgh

Not one single figure could be fair, since every job differs. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind Musselburgh Tolbooth.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Musselburgh begins by asking the same trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — ahead of a quote. Once those are known, a range turns into one fixed number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
