AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mytholm? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just comes once the pump begins drawing it. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Mytholm. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Mytholm, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting HX7 6, or just the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Even a short way up Bank Terrace is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

At a forecourt around Mytholm, whether it is the Matthew Sheard & Sons or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. At home, the car remains exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Hebden Bridge last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car parked in Mytholm. Just in the tank, it stays stable. Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Mytholm

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Asda Express Fuel. Harm only comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Birchcliffe or the heart of Mytholm equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Yorkshire your car is sitting.

Mytholm: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Hebden Royd CofE Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Eaves Road. Or your car is topped up in the car park at Stubbing Wharf, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the other car of a family with both fuel types. Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere in Mytholm or the rest of West Yorkshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mytholm, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. It's been sucked through the filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, maybe midway across Mytholm or returning from Colden Clough LNR. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M62, under 10 miles from Mytholm, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Mytholm to the car park by Saint James is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Mytholm?

A road beside Sylvia Plath Hughes, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Mytholm, our technicians travel to it. What was put in, about the quantity, plus if your engine has turned over: we ask first, since those decide the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when that tank is drained, on the spot. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because what remains won't flush away by itself. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel. At that point our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Hebden Bridge or a drive around Mytholm. It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we leave. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Mytholm included

AdBlue call-outs in Mytholm are passed to teams that cover the towns around it — Calderside, Heptonstall as well as Nutclough — and much of West Yorkshire further out, across HX postcodes. Ring and ask rather than guess when you're by a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Mytholm, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: your car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mytholm: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat price could be honest, since every job differs. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Saint Thomas's Church.

For that in mind, each call from Mytholm begins by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, how much, if the engine ran — before any figure. When they are answered, a range turns into one firm figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
