Nar: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank comes down to one thing more than any other: whether your motor has been run since it was put in. Wherever your car stands — Lower Fold, Nar — never run a motor that hasn't been started yet. Normally this means emptying and properly cleaning it on the spot around Nar — and so leave your key and motor off then phone 0333 366 0103. Where the motor has run, stop safely straight away, then turn the car off. It is a bigger job, though step one doesn't change.

Find the situation below that matches yours, wherever around Lancashire it happened.

On a Nar forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Only now, nozzle yet in hand, it dawns on you that the cap you took off was the wrong one, there at the pump. It might be the Texaco, or perhaps the Shell, or another forecourt around Nar.

What it means: this is the ideal spot to find out. No pump has pulled it in, and so the AdBlue sits just inside the tank.

Clearing the petrol pump is no reason to run it — and so do not get back in. Ask the staff to help you push the car into a parking space, keep the receipt or the bottle, and ring us from the forecourt. Our equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt, so a car that cannot be pushed away is cleared where it is at the petrol pump.

Nar, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. Picked up a container, tipped it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then looked at the cap again, too late. It takes place on driveways just off Toad Leach Lane as regularly as anywhere.

The upshot: zero miles since leaves it almost equal to finding it at the petrol pump. Being reluctant to mix, AdBlue settles to the base in that tank and waits. A night standing alters nothing.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so no one moves your car in the morning. Then call. Out in Middle Healey or right here around Nar, the drain is done on your driveway. Even at night, our pumps stay quiet enough for a residential street.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Nar

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in Nar?

Filled up, pulled away, and before long the engine was turning roughly, blowing smoke, down on power, or lighting up your dash. Maybe driving to Manchester, under 15 miles away, or simply along Wham Bottom Lane.

Meaning? Your fuel pump has sucked the AdBlue in. Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — the further the distance — deeper into the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Stop safely — that is the first job — then switch everything off. On the A627(M), under 3 miles from Nar, that means the next junction, not the services further on. Do not restart the vehicle to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Tell us know the mileage covered as you ring.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

You've only driven this car a week. On your own car, AdBlue is missing or elsewhere. On this one, its inlet is just by your diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Anyone, wherever across Lancashire, could make it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Work on your vehicle frequently needs the owner's go-ahead under rental or fleet agreements.

Sorting it before the van arrives is faster, and so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Waiting for an answer in the car park outside Rochdale, or beside Christ Church? Keep the engine off throughout.

Nar: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

"I think so" is often the most honest answer there is. Which cap came off, you cannot say; but the bottle feels less than it ought to, and a whiff of ammonia lingers by your filler. Possibly it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Shawclough Community Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Broadley Fold.

Meaning? Drips outside the inlet never reach the engine at all. The diesel tank with AdBlue inside is another story. Starting the vehicle won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it would pull it in.

Your move: act as if it got in, and don't start the engine. Describe what you saw on the phone. A clean tank checked is a happier result than a run one drained.

What each AdBlue drain around Nar has in common

Whatever the situation, a single opening applies. Our technicians come to the vehicle, whether it's on a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside The Oxford or a side street close to Thrum Hall, and ask three things: what went in, roughly how much, and if your motor has run. Your price comes over the phone, ahead of anyone setting off, and the answers set the work.

AdBlue crystallises and eats at some metals in fuel systems, and so it won't wash out unaided; that's why a full flush, after this drain, counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Never started? In that case roughly half an hour on site is most jobs.

The last step is firing it up. Our check that it runs correctly on fresh diesel comes before our engineers go. Permanent damage is very rare if it's spotted soon, and the entire job is done where the vehicle is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money upfront. Dig out your insurance before we arrive: misfuelling cover comes built into plenty of policies.
