Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Neachells

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until the motor pulls it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Neachells. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Neachells

Do:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so don't throw it out.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting WV13 3, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's pointless.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Planetary Road.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Neachells forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included. On the drive, your car stays just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Wednesfield last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside. Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting in Neachells. Only in your tank, it stays the same. Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the whole problem. Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through. Whether the car sits in Wellington Place or the heart of Neachells, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in West Midlands the vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Neachells: how it ends up there

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two may look identical. Nobody means it. It mostly happens at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Patrick's Catholic Primary Academy. In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Phoenix Road. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Merry Boys.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types. Wherever you're in Neachells or the rest of West Midlands, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Neachells?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Perhaps returning from Black Country Millennium Forest, or midway across Neachells, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M6, under 3 miles from Neachells, at the next junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why a hop across Neachells to park beside Trellis and a drive of under 3 miles for Wolverhampton are such different jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. If it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Neachells

The car stays put, whether that's a street beside Geometric Panels, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Neachells, and our van travels to it. The job depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for first — what got in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. The system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of your car. Not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step. You set off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Neachells or in a space by Willenhall. It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Neachells: the cost of fixing it

Each job differs, and so no fixed price is fair. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Lock.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from Neachells begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
