AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Neals Green? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till your engine pulls it round. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully rinsed where your car stands in Neals Green. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Neals Green: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CV7 9, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Not to do:

  • Moving the car just a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Carvell Close.
  • By the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Neals Green, whether it's the Shell or elsewhere. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what your motor lets out. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very place the intake sucks from. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Holbrooks overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Once it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it is removed from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages. A vehicle left standing around Neals Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Whether the car sits in Longford or the heart of Neals Green, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Warwickshire the vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Neals Green

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; many layouts invite it. A container picked up when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Wheelwright Lane Primary School. After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Wheelwright Lane. Another version: dim light, a pub car park outside The Bull & Anchor, and someone opening that flap the first time.

Hired cars, brand-new motors, company cars, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it the most. Leave it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever around Neals Green or the rest of Warwickshire you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Neals Green?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Prologis Country Park or halfway across Neals Green. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M6, under a mile from Neals Green, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Neals Green to the car park by Jimmy Hill is a very different job from a run towards Coventry, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's noticed soon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Neals Green: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Neals Green: a side street near St Giles, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the work, and so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, about the amount, plus whether the engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't flush out unaided. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside Coventry Arena or a driveway around Neals Green, that is where our technicians start it and you set off. Before we leave, our engineers confirm it is running properly with fresh diesel in. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Neals Green?

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the cost is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Coventry Building Society Arena.

That is why each call from Neals Green starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. With them, a range narrows to a single firm number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
