How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Nether Edge
Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Nether Edge. Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Nether Edge and Sharrow Head carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.
Every tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in the gap that the mistake lives.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Nether Edge: how it takes place
Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.
On a driveway off Sandford Grove Road before work, or in the car park outside Broadfield Hotel on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.
New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.
Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Nether Edge or out in Sharrow.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Nether Edge or a drive out in Carter Knowle. A few seconds, that's all.
- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.
- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many cars show which belongs in each filler just there.
- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Sheffield.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
The day the light goes on, wherever around South Yorkshire, use this routine.
- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Emily Road.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.
- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.
- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using its own spout.
- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Nether Edge?
Brief order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.
The attendants at Esso, The Log Shop or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle clear if asked. If you're on your own driveway around Nether Edge, leave it where it sits.
If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Nether Edge sits under 5 miles from the M1; there, take the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Nether Edge.
Nether Edge: what occurs when our technicians turn up
Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Jamia Masjid & Usmania Education Centre, or by Nether Edge Primary School. Those replies decide this work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run. You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.
Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car. We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.
Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
