AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Nether Yeadon and Yeadon carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently. It is in the gap that the slip happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Nether Yeadon

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Gill Lane before work, or in the car park at The Station Inn on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Nether Yeadon or out in Henshaw.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Rawdon or a forecourt in Nether Yeadon, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
  • Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark which goes in each inlet just there.
  • Can't see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Apperley Bridge? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Church Street.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read it.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Step five stays out.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Nether Yeadon already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine. Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Morrison's Petrol Filling Station or somewhere else. At home around Nether Yeadon? Then your car stays put.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off. On the M606, under 10 miles from Nether Yeadon, that means the next exit. A short hop across Nether Yeadon is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

When we turn up in Nether Yeadon, what happens?

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Brethren's Meeting Room, or by Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School. We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those replies decide this work and the quote. On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Once the filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel is added, and then your car is tested. We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Trinity Church Rawdon.
