Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Nethercourt: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Nethercourt. The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen round Nethercourt and Pegwell carry a second liquid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers. Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side behind one flap. Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. It is in the gap that the slip happens.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Nethercourt?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Manston Road before work, or in the car park outside St. Lawrence Tavern heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

New-to-you cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on. Whether it happens in Newington or the middle of Nethercourt, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Nethercourt

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Nethercourt or a drive over in Ramsgate. Seconds, no more.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
  • The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Ramsgate's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Kent that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Grummock Avenue, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Do not go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Nethercourt?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your engine remains off. Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump. Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Tesco, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump. At home around Nethercourt? Then the car stays put.

Already started? Stop once it's safe, then turn off. Nethercourt lies under 25 miles from the M20; there, take the first junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Canterbury, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Nethercourt.

Nethercourt: what occurs when our technicians arrive

The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside St Lawrence Church, or outside St Laurence In Thanet Church of England Junior Academy. Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and quote. The price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away on its own, no matter how long it is left. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

The vehicle stays put. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to St Lawrence Parish Hall, a lay-by on the way to Warre Recreation Ground, a drive. Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Ramsgate Youth Centre.
