AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Netherseal? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Netherseal. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Netherseal: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pull the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a DE12 8 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is pointless.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Holly Bush Close.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move your car off the island if you are at a forecourt around Netherseal, whether it is the Shell or elsewhere. On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel. Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same place the intake draws from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Overseal last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight in Netherseal makes it worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a second form of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and the issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Short Heath or the middle of Netherseal.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Derbyshire the vehicle is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Netherseal

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. Mostly it is not the forecourt: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. The top-up is hurried outside Netherseal St Peter's CofE (C) Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped off. A driver tips the bottle in at home, just off Dog Lane, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark by Cricketts Inn, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types. Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere around Netherseal or the remainder of Derbyshire you are.

Netherseal: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, perhaps part way across Netherseal or returning from Hunts Lane Recreation Ground. When you safely can, stop then turn it off — with no turning it on again to test. Every start pulls more of it through.

Netherseal sits under 3 miles from the M42; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Netherseal to the car park by Netherseal Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Lichfield, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Permanent damage is very rare when it is caught early.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Netherseal

The car stays put, whether that's a street beside Netherseal Village Hall, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Netherseal, and our van comes to it. Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. The system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of your vehicle follows last, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where needed, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the system is bled with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, by Polesworth or on a driveway in Netherseal. Our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave. We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

Netherseal: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure could be honest, since every job is different. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Peter's.

Before a quote, not after, every call from Netherseal begins with three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is given on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
