Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Netherthorpe: Why It Occurs

Normally, if the engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where your car is around Netherthorpe. Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the engine — but plenty of current diesels seen about Netherthorpe and Wales Bar hold a second liquid too. The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. It is in that gap that the error happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Netherthorpe

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Melton Court before work, or in the car park outside Yellow Lion on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Netherthorpe or out in Aston.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Swallownest or a forecourt in Netherthorpe, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Kiveton Bridge? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside Worksop Road at the roadside.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Step five stays off limits.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Netherthorpe already?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the BP or anywhere else. On your own drive around Netherthorpe? Then your car stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run. Come off the M1 — under a mile out of Netherthorpe — at the first junction. Mileage counts — a short hop across Netherthorpe makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Sheffield — so tell us about how far it went.

What takes place when our engineers arrive around Netherthorpe

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether outside Aston Hall Junior and Infant School, beside All Saints Church, Aston-cum-Aughton or at home, the van travels to it. Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the answers decide the work and price. During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

The system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it counts more. Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
