New Barnet: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump starts pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around New Barnet, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in New Barnet

Do these:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting EN5 5, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Never:

  • Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Station Road.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever New Barnet forecourt you are on, the Shell or any other. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. From a separate tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what your engine lets out. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its fuel from. A car topped up on a driveway in Hadley yesterday evening and not started since is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. Overnight, a car parked around New Barnet with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is only in the tank, nothing changes. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in New Barnet

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the BP. No harm comes while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether the car is in Monken Hadley or the centre of New Barnet, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater London your car is sitting.

New Barnet: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Cromer Road Primary School the refill is rushed. After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Plantagenet Road. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Railway Tavern, the vehicle is refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're in New Barnet or the remainder of Greater London, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

New Barnet: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, maybe part way across New Barnet or coming back from Highlands Gardens. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M25, under 3 miles from New Barnet, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across New Barnet to the car park by New Barnet Friends Meeting House (Quakers) is a very different job from a run towards St Albans, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. If it is caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around New Barnet?

Wherever it has stopped around New Barnet — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road beside New Barnet War Memorial — our van comes to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, about how much, and whether the motor has turned over: we ask before all else, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is drained, on the spot. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because residue will not flush away by itself. After that, the filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of the car. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around New Barnet or in a space at the nearest station. It's checked on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers go. Since the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in New Barnet?

No flat figure would be honest, since each job is different. What shifts the cost is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Mary Immaculate & St Peter.

Which fluid went in, what quantity, and if it ran: every New Barnet call opens with exactly those, before any figure, not after. Their replies shrink a range right down to one number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
