Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Brighton: Why It Occurs

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around New Brighton. Reading in advance? In that case the rest covers why it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Ponterwyl, as well as New Brighton, run on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

New Brighton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Ffordd Newydd Brighton, perhaps at Tavern on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of New Brighton or out in Mynydd Isa.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Alltami or a forecourt around New Brighton.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what belongs in each filler right there.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Buckley's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever across Flintshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Mold Road.
  • Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Finish once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its own spout.
  • Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Never go on to step five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in New Brighton?

Short list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when you ask. Your own drive in New Brighton is the place it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Come off the M56 — under 10 miles out of New Brighton — at the first junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Chester, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across New Brighton.

New Brighton: what occurs when our technicians get there

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Clwyd Theatr or on your own drive. Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, since the replies settle this work and the price. No one sets off until you've had the quote by phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. Filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car. Next we start it and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

New Brighton and Flintshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a rural village, New Brighton shares its vans surrounding places — Leadmill, Soughton — all the way across CH postcodes and the surrounding area around them. Give a postcode that starts CH7 6, and our van arrives quickest.

Shifting the car is not needed. Wherever it stands — near The Law Courts, in a lay-by en route to Bryn-Y-Baal Quarry, at home — that's where it gets drained. Guessing won't help behind Mynydd Isa, on a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and check.
