AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in New Charlton? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. In New Charlton, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Charlton

Things to do:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops anyone turning the power on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.
  • Give us a postcode starting SE7 7, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Anchor And Hope Lane.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever New Charlton forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other. If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the pickup sucks from. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Dormer Yard yesterday and never started remains the simple case, provided nobody turns your key.

Two kinds of damage come from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. A vehicle left standing around New Charlton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in New Charlton

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Asda, and this issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of New Charlton or out in Barton Yard, costs more than nearly any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere around Greater London your vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

New Charlton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. It usually happens at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Fossdene Primary School the top-up is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bugsby's Way. Or your car is topped up in the car park at Rose of Denmark, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you are around New Charlton or the remainder of Greater London.

New Charlton: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. With any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might show up, perhaps part way across New Charlton or coming back from Gilbert's Pit. Once you safely can, pull over then switch it off — without restarting to test. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M11, under 10 miles from New Charlton, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across New Charlton to the car park by Marks & Spencer is one thing; heading for London, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been run. Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around New Charlton: what it takes

Wherever it has come to rest around New Charlton — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street beside Rathmore Youth Centre — our van comes to the car. Three replies decide the job, and so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue will not flush away unaided. After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of the car. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. Whether it's a parking bay at Charlton or a driveway around New Charlton, that is where we start the car and you set off. The test before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around New Charlton

Each job is different, so no fixed quote is fair. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind TK Maxx.

With that in mind, every call from New Charlton begins with the same trio — which fluid went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of a figure. Their answers shrink the range right down to a single number.

The price is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
