Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Lanark

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when your pump begins drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around New Lanark, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in New Lanark: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a ML11 9 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: the motor remains off.
  • Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.
  • Even a short stretch up Rosedale Street is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever New Lanark forecourt you're on, the Esso or any other. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the intake draws from. A car topped up on a driveway in Jerviswood yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once the motor turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A car left sitting around New Lanark with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in New Lanark

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Gulf, and this problem is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Nemphlar or the centre of New Lanark alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever across South Lanarkshire the car sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around New Lanark

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually takes place outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried. In the evening, a container goes in on a drive near New Lanark Road. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Clydesdale Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever around New Lanark or the remainder of South Lanarkshire you are.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in New Lanark?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps midway across New Lanark or coming back from Roof Garden. When you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to test. Every start pulls more of it through.

New Lanark lies under 5 miles from the M74; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing New Lanark to park beside New Lanark WW1 Memorial and a drive of under 25 miles for Glasgow are such distinct jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the flushing where your car has ended up, and once the motor has run there is more of it. If it's noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around New Lanark

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around New Lanark: a side street near Robert Owen's House, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers shape the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about what quantity, and if your motor has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains will not flush out by itself. A test of the car follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped. Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Then our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by Lanark or a drive in New Lanark. Our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel before leaving. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

New Lanark: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat price could be honest, since every job differs. What moves the cost is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind New Lanark Community Hall.

With that in mind, every enquiry from New Lanark opens with the identical trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — before any quote. When they are known, a range becomes a single firm number.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
