AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in New Road Side? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes once your pump begins pulling it. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits in New Road Side. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in New Road Side: the first few minutes

Do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BD12 8, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Elizabeth Street.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever New Road Side forecourt you're on, the Esso included. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Delph Hill last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out. If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning in New Road Side makes things worse. Inside that tank only, waiting costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in that tank, it does nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Low Moor or the centre of New Road Side alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Yorkshire the car is standing.

New Road Side: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Usually it's never the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. The refill gets hurried outside Worthinghead Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Elizabeth Drive. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Crown.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuels. Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere in New Road Side or the rest of West Yorkshire you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around New Road Side?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Low Moor Banks, say, or part way across New Road Side. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M606, under 3 miles from New Road Side, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across New Road Side to the car park by St Mary the Virgin is one thing; driving towards Bradford, under 5 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Long-term damage is very unusual if it is caught quickly.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in New Road Side

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around New Road Side: a side street close to Aldersgate Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What was put in, about the quantity, plus if the engine has been run: our engineers ask first, because those shape the work.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because residue won't wash away by itself. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if your engine hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step. At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Low Moor or a drive around New Road Side. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians go. No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around New Road Side

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Three things move the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Holy Trinity Church.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, every call from New Road Side begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran. Given those replies, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
