AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Scriven? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till the engine pulls it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around New Scriven, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, New Scriven: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting HG5 9, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Don't:

  • Shifting your car just a few yards is no reason to start the motor.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch up Park Way.
  • Emptying your tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

Moving the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever New Scriven forecourt you are on, the Asda included. At home, the car remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. When your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Lingerfield last night and not started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody turns your key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches till it's removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight around New Scriven makes things worse. Inside the tank alone, time does nothing. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in New Scriven

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a fault of thin fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through. Whether the vehicle sits in Calcutt or the heart of New Scriven, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. Anywhere in North Yorkshire your car has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Scriven: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A container bought when driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Mary's Primary School Knaresborough, A Voluntary Catholic Academy the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Scriven Road. Else, in dim light outside The Crown Inn, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare car of a family with both fuel types. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around New Scriven or the remainder of North Yorkshire you are.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in New Scriven, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. With any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Jacob Smith Park or halfway across New Scriven. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A1(M), under 5 miles from New Scriven, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across New Scriven to park beside Park Grove Methodist Church and a drive of under 10 miles towards Ripon are such different jobs. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. If it's spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around New Scriven

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around New Scriven: a side street near Knaresborough Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What went in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has been run: we check before all else, because those shape the job.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not flush away unaided. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes last. You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around New Scriven or in a bay by Knaresborough. The check before our technicians leave is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around New Scriven?

Since the callouts differ, a single price wouldn't be honest. Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind St John's House plaque.

Before any quote, not after, each call from New Scriven opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran. Their answers narrow the range down to a single figure.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
