AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Town? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts drawing it. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in New Town. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do right now, New Town: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BD23 2, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is wasted.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance down Bennett Street.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

Rolling the car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever New Town forecourt you're on, the Tesco or any other. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Middle Town overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight in New Town leaves it worse. In the tank alone, waiting does nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a second form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in New Town

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the main fault. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Mill Fields or the middle of New Town.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around North Yorkshire the vehicle is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around New Town?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. The top-up is rushed outside Christ Church Church of England Primary School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Cumberland Street. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Craven Hotel, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuels. An identical mistake, an identical first step — keep it off — wherever you are around New Town or the remainder of North Yorkshire.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in New Town, and the motor started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across New Town or returning from The Beach. No restarting to check: stop once safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M65, under 15 miles from New Town, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Bradford, under 25 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing New Town to the car park by Christ Church. Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. If it's spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

New Town: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around New Town — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Champions Church — our van comes to the car. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, since those replies decide this work.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. What remains from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol. Next, your filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your vehicle. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with new diesel. You head off as soon as our engineers have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around New Town or in a space by Skipton. We check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

New Town: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Trinity Methodist Church.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from New Town opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus whether it ran. Their answers narrow a range right down to one figure.

The price is given during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
