AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Town? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep your ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once the pump starts drawing it. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in New Town. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Town: the first few minutes
Things to do:
- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys away.
- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BD22 6, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.
Things not to do:
- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.
- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way along Greenfield Court.
- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.
On a forecourt around New Town, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.
Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup draws from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Guard House last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it would be first through once the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.
Once it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. By daybreak, a car parked around New Town with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just inside that tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol
Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Morrisons, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Keighley or the heart of New Town alike.
The same good news holds as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Yorkshire the car is sitting.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around New Town
In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may look the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs invite it. It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.
It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Keighley St Andrew's CofE Primary School and Nursery the refill is rushed. Near Cashmere Street, a driver tips a container in at home after work. Another pattern: darkness, the car park outside The Reservoir Tavern, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.
The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor of a home with both fuel types. Same slip, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around New Town or the remainder of West Yorkshire.
Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around New Town?
Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.
Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Lund Park, say, or midway across New Town. When safe, pull over and turn everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.
On the M606, under 10 miles from New Town, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.
How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across New Town to the car park by Abuzahra Mosque is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.
There is more to clean out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted early.
Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in New Town: what it takes
Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around New Town: a side street near All Saints' church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has been run: our engineers check first, because those decide the job.
Then that tank is drained where the car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through because residue will not flush out unaided. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.
The final step is to prime the system on clean diesel. At that point our technicians start the engine and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Keighley or a driveway around New Town. The check before our engineers go is that it runs properly on clean diesel. No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

No moving is needed. In New Town, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is drained where it stands, be it in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around New Town: the cost of fixing it
Because each jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be fair. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Al-Amin Masjid.
For that reason, each enquiry from New Town opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of any figure. When those are answered, a range becomes one fixed number.
Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
