AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in New York? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble begins once it is sucked through the pump — it will not burn, and it won't combine with diesel. In New York, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, New York: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

  • Pocket your keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting NE29 8, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: the engine remains off.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Murton Lane.
  • Emptying your tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

On a forecourt in New York, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in West Chirton last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. A car left standing around New York with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the eg, and the issue is diluted fuel. No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in West Monkseaton or the middle of New York.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Tyne and Wear your car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around New York

Many motors place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear the same. No one means it. It usually happens at home, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside New York Primary School the refill is hurried. Someone pours the container in at home, right off New York Road, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside New York & Murton Social Club, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere around Tyne and Wear, New York as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around New York, and your engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might appear, perhaps part way across New York or returning from Hilltop Millennium Green. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

New York lies under 10 miles from the A167(M); if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

Hopping across New York to the car park by Moor Park Community Centre is one thing; driving for Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the motor has run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's spotted early.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around New York

Wherever it has stopped around New York — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Saint Aidan's — our van travels to the car. Which fluid went in, about how much, and whether the motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, since those decide the job.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear out by itself. Testing the vehicle comes last, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. Whether it's a parking bay outside Seaton Delaval or a driveway around New York, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off. It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in New York

There's no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same. What changes the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind PaddlePod (Shiremoor).

Before a figure, not after, each enquiry from New York opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and if the engine ran. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. While our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

New York: still beside the car?
