AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Newborough? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. In Newborough, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Newborough, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting PE6 7, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave it off.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Soke Road.
  • Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Newborough filling station — the Esso included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the intake draws from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car filled in Eye Green last night and never switched on remains the straightforward case, provided no one touches the key.

After it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight in Newborough leaves things worse. In that tank alone, time costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second form of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Tesco, and the issue is thinned fuel. No damage is done as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Newborough or out in Eye, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just inside your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has come to rest across Cambridgeshire.

Newborough: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Newborough CofE Primary School the refill is hurried. A driver pours the container in outside their house, right off Waterfall Gardens, as the day ends. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park outside the pub in the village.

It comes up most in a rental, a new car, a company vehicle, or the spare motor of a home with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know the least. Same mistake, same first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Newborough or the rest of Cambridgeshire.

Newborough: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from The Decoy, perhaps, or midway across Newborough. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the A1(M), under 10 miles from Newborough, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving for Peterborough, under 5 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Newborough to the car park by Saint Bartholomew. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once your engine has been run, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is caught early.

Newborough: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Newborough: a side street near Peakirk Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three answers, and we get before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is emptied, right there. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. Whether it's a parking space at Peterborough or a drive around Newborough, that is where we fire it up and you set off. Before we leave, our engineers check it is running properly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Newborough and Cambridgeshire

AdBlue call-outs in Newborough go to teams that cover the towns near it — Milking Nook, Peakirk as well as Gunthorpe — and much of Cambridgeshire beyond, throughout PE postcodes. Phone and check instead of guessing when you're by a border, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Anywhere the car stands — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Newborough, a rural village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Newborough?

Not one flat figure would be fair, because each job is different. Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind The Monument.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Newborough call opens by asking exactly that, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. While the van is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
