Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newent

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully purged where your car sits around Newent. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Newent, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting GL18 1, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Culver Street.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Newent filling station — the Gulf among them — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to travel that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Malswick last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car parked in Newent. Just in your tank, it stays the same. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so watering it won't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in The Scarr or the heart of Newent equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in Gloucestershire the car sits.

Newent: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. The top-up gets rushed outside Glebe Infants' School, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped off. Someone tips the container in outside their house, right off Broad Street, as the day ends. One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Red Lion, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company motor, or the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers know the least. Keep it off: that's the first response to the same mistake, anywhere in Newent or the rest of Gloucestershire you are.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Newent?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Newent Recreation Ground, or part way across Newent, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M50, under 3 miles from Newent, at the first junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why a hop across Newent to park near Market House and a drive of under 10 miles for Gloucester are such different jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. When it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Newent

Wherever it has come to rest in Newent — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Newent Library — the van travels to the car. Three replies decide the job, and so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has run.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. Residue from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol. A test of the vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where needed, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to bleed the system on clean diesel. After that we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Ledbury or a drive in Newent. It is checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs correctly before we go. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Newent

Every job differs, and so not one single price is honest. What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Newent Memorial Hall.

For that reason, every call from Newent begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid was put in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote. Those replies shrink the range right down to a single figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
