Newfield Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Newfield Green. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
No single fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Newfield Green and Meersbrook carry, with diesel for your engine. Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.
There is a filler on each tank. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly. That gap is where the slip lives.
Newfield Green: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place
It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
On a driveway off Plowright Close before work, or in the car park outside The Blackstock heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.
New-to-you motors are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Newfield Green or out in Rollestone.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Gleadless Valley or a forecourt in Newfield Green.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Sheffield's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.
Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across South Yorkshire that is.
- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Plowright Mount.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.
Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Never go on to stage five.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Newfield Green?
Short list, then. Top of that: the motor remains unstarted. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.
Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Harvest Energy, the City Road Service Station or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Newfield Green.
Where the motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn it off. The next junction means the place to come off if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Newfield Green. A short hop across Newfield Green is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.
Our arrival in Newfield Green, and what happens next
The van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Newfield Green Library, or by Bankwood Primary School. We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies determine the work and our quote. That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.
Then your tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it counts more. The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle. Before leaving, our technicians start it and confirm that it's running smoothly.
With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we are there. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
