Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Newham Grange and Gilpin Brown run, with diesel feeding the engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together behind one flap. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Newham Grange: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Newham Grange Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside The Senator's.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Newham Grange or out in Stockton Grange.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Primrose Hill or a forecourt around Newham Grange.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Stockton? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Durham that is.

  • Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Stanhope Road.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there. Don't go on to step five.

Newham Grange: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Esso or anywhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Newham Grange.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Newham Grange lies under 10 miles from the A1(M); there, take the next junction. Distance matters — a quick hop across Newham Grange makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Durham — so say roughly how far it went.

Newham Grange: what takes place when our engineers turn up

Outside St Bede's Catholic Academy, near St Paul's Newtown - A Church of England and Methodist Church Partnership or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Those replies determine this work and our quote, so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run. During the call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits. After the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle is tested. The motor is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians leave.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once we are there. No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
