Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newhaven

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition too. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The harm begins once it's sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Newhaven. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Newhaven, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting EH6 4, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Don't do these:

  • Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch along Peacock Court is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Newhaven, whether it's the Asda or elsewhere. On that drive, the vehicle remains exactly where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Leith overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Newhaven leaves it worse. In your tank alone, time costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the BP, and the issue is diluted fuel. No harm is done as long as it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your car is in Bonnington or the centre of Newhaven, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Wherever in City of Edinburgh your car has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Newhaven

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. No one intends it. It usually occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. The top-up gets rushed outside the local primary school, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken off. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Newhaven Main Street, as the day ends. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Harbour Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it most. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Newhaven or the rest of City of Edinburgh.

Newhaven: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the fuel filter, through the lines, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Maybe returning from Newhaven Heritage Community Garden, or midway across Newhaven, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Newhaven sits under 10 miles from the M8; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Newhaven to the car park by War Memorial is one matter; heading for Edinburgh, under 3 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where the car has stopped. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it is spotted quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Newhaven?

The car remains where it is, whether that's a street near Heart of Newhaven Community, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Newhaven, and the van travels to it. The work rests on three answers, which we ask for before all else — what got in, the quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is drained, right there. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the system on fresh diesel. You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Newhaven or in a bay outside Edinburgh Waverley. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go. As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains around Newhaven and across City of Edinburgh

The teams that answer AdBlue calls around Newhaven also cover the spots about it, North Leith, Trinity and Hamilton Wynd among them, and most of City of Edinburgh beyond, across the EH postcode area. Ring and check instead of guessing when you're by a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Newhaven, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, be it in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

Newhaven: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single price, since the jobs are not the same. Three things change the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Anchor.

What went in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: each Newhaven call begins by asking exactly those, ahead of any figure, never afterwards. When those are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

The price is given during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

In Newhaven and still beside the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to leave it. Keys out, motor off, ignition off. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across Newhaven or wherever in City of Edinburgh, once you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
