AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newlands: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It
Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Around Newlands, finding it before the motor turns normally means draining and a full flush on the spot. Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Diesel goes to the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen about Newlands and Newby carry another liquid as well. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Newlands?
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
On a driveway off Westfield Avenue before work, or in the car park at Newlands Park on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.
Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.
A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on. Scalby Mills or the heart of Newlands: it is the same few seconds either way.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Whether a Newlands forecourt or a drive out in Prospect Mount, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.
- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.
- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark what belongs in each filler just there.
- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Scarborough.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
When the light goes on, wherever around North Yorkshire, use this routine.
- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Harewood Avenue on the verge.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.
- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its own spout.
- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel cap remained shut throughout. After that, start your car.
If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Stage five stays out.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Newlands?
Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.
The staff at Gulf, JET or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle clear when asked. If you are on your own drive around Newlands, leave the car where it stands.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. On the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Newlands, that means the next junction. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Newlands makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to York — so tell us about how far it went.
When we turn up in Newlands, what occurs?
By St Peter's Catholic Primary School - a Catholic voluntary academy, close to Northstead Methodist Church or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those replies settle the work and the price. On the phone call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.
The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Before we leave, our engineers start the car and check that it's running smoothly.
With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
