AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Newtown? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Newtown. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Newtown: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Pull the keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it out.
  • Call right where you are. Say a PE29 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Even a short way along Hartford Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Draining that tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Newtown, whether it is the Sainsbury's or somewhere else. On that drive, your car remains just as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from. A vehicle filled on a drive in Hinchingbrooke overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the motor turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out. Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked in Newtown. Just in the tank, it stays stable. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the main problem. No harm is done while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the following tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Newtown or out in Stukeley, does more harm than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Cambridgeshire your car has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Newtown?

Many cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Hartford Junior School. Close to South Street, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening. One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside Montagu Club, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

Hired vehicles, new motors, company vehicles, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Wherever across Cambridgeshire, Newtown as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Newtown?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, maybe midway across Newtown or coming back from Riverside Park. Once you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without restarting to test. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the A1(M), under 5 miles from Newtown, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Newtown to the car park by The Catholic Church of St Michael The Archangel is a very different job from a run towards Cambridge, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is spotted early.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Newtown: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around Newtown — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by Pavillion — our van comes to your vehicle. Three answers shape the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly the amount, plus whether your engine has run.

Next, draining your tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through because residue won't wash away unaided. Testing your vehicle follows at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the system on clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Huntingdon or on a drive around Newtown. The check before our engineers go is that it runs properly on clean diesel. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Cambridgeshire, Newtown included

A mobile service suits Newtown, a new town: you have no need to take your vehicle to us, since our technicians empty it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Newtown?

Every job differs, and so no single quote is honest. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Huntingdon Boat Club.

Which fluid got in, how much, and whether it ran: each Newtown enquiry opens by asking precisely those, before a quote, not after. Given them, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
