Newtown: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Around Newtown, finding it before the motor turns normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Fryern Hill, as well as Newtown, carry on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler. Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap. Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Newtown: how it happens

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off George Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Wagon Works.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Newtown or out in Eastleigh.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Newtown forecourt or a drive out in Chandlers Ford, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Eastleigh's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Northlands Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Don't go on to step five.

Newtown: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor. Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs the pump. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Texaco or anywhere else. Your own driveway around Newtown is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. On the M3, under a mile from Newtown, that means the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Newtown is less a job than a run of under 10 miles to Southampton, and so say.

Newtown: what occurs when our technicians get there

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside The Crescent Primary School, close to 50 years memorial or on your own drive. The answers settle the work and our quote, so we ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run. That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is emptied. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, no matter how long it is left. Filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car. Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive. Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
