Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Noctorum: Why It Happens
Leave the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Noctorum. Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?
Not one fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Noctorum and Bidston Hill carry, with diesel feeding the engine. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.
Each tank has one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. It is in that gap that the slip lives.
Noctorum: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Noctorum Way, or heading home in the car park outside The Wirral Hundred.
Unfamiliar motors are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Woodchurch or the middle of Noctorum: it is the same few seconds in both.
The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart
Check these first, at a forecourt around Noctorum or a driveway over in Claughton. Seconds, that's all.
- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.
- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Upton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
The day the light goes on, anywhere in Merseyside, follow this routine.
- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Westway.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.
- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.
- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Don't go on to step five.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Noctorum?
Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.
If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Asda or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump. Your own driveway in Noctorum is where it should stay.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. Noctorum lies under a mile from the M53; there, take the next junction. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Noctorum is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles to Liverpool, and so say.
Our arrival in Noctorum, and what takes place next
By Co-op Academy Hillside, close to St Andrew's Church Centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Those replies determine this work and the price, so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run. During the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.
Then the tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly. Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes out on its own, however long it sits. Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then the car gets tested. Next our engineers start the engine and check it runs smoothly before we leave.
Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
