AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Noel Park? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Noel Park. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Noel Park

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call right where you are. Say a N22 6 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Gladstone Avenue.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

At a forecourt in Noel Park, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what your motor emits. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup draws from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in West Green last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight around Noel Park leaves things worse. In that tank alone, waiting does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Noel Park

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Texaco. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Noel Park or out in Hornsey, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in Greater London the vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Noel Park: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one means it. It mostly happens at home, from a container bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Lift Noel Park. After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Farrant Avenue. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Westbury, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuels. Wherever you're around Noel Park or the remainder of Greater London, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Noel Park?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via your filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Noel Park or returning from Russell Park. No restarting to check: pull over when safe, then switch it off. Every start pulls more of that through.

Noel Park lies under 10 miles from the M1; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards London, under 10 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Noel Park to the car park by St Mark's. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Noel Park: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Noel Park — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Sandbunker Community Centre — the van travels to your vehicle. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if the motor has been run, since those answers determine the work.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel. At that point our engineers start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Alexandra Palace or a driveway in Noel Park. The check before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Noel Park: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one single quote is fair. What changes the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Eldon Road Baptist Church.

That is why each call from Noel Park starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
