AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Nook: What Now?

Has your motor run since the AdBlue went in? That one point settles almost everything about what comes next. Wherever your car is — Upper Green, Nook — don't start an engine that hasn't run yet. Usually that means draining and properly rinsing it on the spot in Nook — so leave the key and motor off and ring 0333 366 0103. When the engine has been run, stop somewhere safe first, then turn it off. The job is bigger, but the first stage is the same.

On a Nook forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you just spot it as you're stood at the pump, bottle or nozzle in hand. It could be the Esso, or perhaps the BP, or a different station around Nook.

Put simply: there is no better spot exists to spot it. No pump has drawn it in, so the AdBlue stays just inside your tank.

Next: resist the urge to start it only to free up the petrol pump. Ring us from the forecourt after the vehicle sits in a bay — the staff will lend a hand to push it — and keep the receipt. If it cannot be shifted, it can be cleared at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

At home around Nook with AdBlue in the diesel tank

Several days had gone by with the dash light on. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the drive, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look a second time at the cap. Houses just off The Nook are hit as much as anywhere else.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. Being reluctant to mix, AdBlue settles to the base in your tank and waits. One night parked changes nothing.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so nobody moves your car in the morning. Then call. Your drive is where it is drained, whether in Nook or Haigh Moor. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel in Nook?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Nook Green, say, or the way to Wakefield — a run of under 5 miles.

What it means: your fuel system has drawn the AdBlue in. Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — the further the distance — on into the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Next: pick a safe spot, stop, then switch the motor off. On the M62, under a mile from Nook, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Roughly what distance did it gone? Say so when you phone.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

A week ago, the car was new to you. Unbeknown to you, the two inlets are next to each other here — not like your own car, which has none or stores it in another spot. Anyone, wherever in West Yorkshire, could make it.

In short: an extra step on top of the cases above, which turn on whether it's run. Plenty of hire and company contracts require the owner's sign-off before repairs.

Do this: hire firm or your fleet manager to begin with, us second, since sorting it beforehand saves time. Keep the vehicle switched off while the answer arrives, whether you are waiting at Morley or close to West Ardsley Community Centre.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Nook?

At times, "I think so" is all anyone can honestly say. A slight ammonia-like smell hangs around the filler, the bottle seems too light, and the cap you took off is a blur. A hurried top-up by the gates of Westerton Primary Academy, or a visit to a friend in Black Gates: both fit.

Meaning? Spills around the inlet never touch your motor at all. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Any AdBlue in that tank would be drawn in by firing up the car, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

Take it that it was put in, and don't turn your key. Describe what you saw on your phone. A clear tank looked at is a better result than an already-run one emptied.

What each AdBlue drain in Nook has in common

Whichever scenario you are in, the job starts the same way. Our technicians come to the vehicle, whether it's at a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside The British Oak or a side street near West Ardsley Methodist Church, and ask three things: what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run. On the phone, before anything else, you hear our quote, and those replies decide the work too.

Then the tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter has been cleaned or changed, and your car is then checked. Not started? In that case about half an hour once we are there is most jobs.

The final step is starting the engine. Before our engineers head off, it is checked to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, nothing in advance. Plenty of policies include misfuelling, so check yours while the van travels.

Whether the car is on a lay-by on the way to Haigh Wood or in a car park in the middle of Nook, it doesn't need to shift. Our van empties it where it stands. Ring and ask rather than guess if you're by Tingley Methodist Church, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain.
