Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North Benfleet

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off then leave the ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around North Benfleet. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

North Benfleet, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, take the keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not throw it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SS13 2, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: your motor remains off.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.
  • Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up Clifton Road.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any North Benfleet forecourt — the Shell included — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave it exactly where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Eversley last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches till it is cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages. By daybreak, a car sitting in North Benfleet with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is only inside the tank, it doesn't. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so watering it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Nevendon or the centre of North Benfleet equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever across Essex your car has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in North Benfleet: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look identical. Nobody intends it. Usually it's never the filling station: someone buys a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Montgomerie Primary School. Close to Pound Lane, someone pours a bottle in on that drive after work. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Gun, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare motor of a home with both fuel types — the cars people use least. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, wherever in North Benfleet or the rest of Essex you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in North Benfleet?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Through the filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, maybe midway across North Benfleet or returning from Page Wood. No starting it again to check: stop when it is safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M25, under 15 miles from North Benfleet, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Hopping across North Benfleet to the car park by All Saints, North Benfleet is one thing; heading for Southend-on-Sea, under 10 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. If it is spotted early, permanent damage is very rare.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in North Benfleet: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a road near Everesley Sports Centre, a drive, a layby or a filling station in North Benfleet, and our van travels to it. The work depends on three answers, and we ask for first — what was put in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself. Testing your car follows last, once clean diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the system is bled with new diesel. Whether it is a parking space by Pitsea or a drive around North Benfleet, that is where we start the engine and you set off. It's tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers leave. No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there. At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around North Benfleet?

Not one flat figure would be honest, since every job differs. What changes the cost is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Bread of Life Ministries Miracle Centre.

With that in mind, each enquiry from North Benfleet begins with the same trio — what got in, how much, if the engine ran — before any quote. Their answers narrow the range right down to a single number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
