AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North Carlton? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition too. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly purged where the car sits in North Carlton. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around North Carlton: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can see.
  • Call just where you are. Say a S81 9 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the motor.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along The Green.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever North Carlton forecourt you're on, the Tesco or any other. At your own drive, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Wigthorpe last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. By daybreak, a car sitting around North Carlton with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just inside that tank, it doesn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Wallingwells or the middle of North Carlton.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Nottinghamshire the car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in North Carlton?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it. It usually happens at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside Ramsden Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Greenway. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Blue Bell, the vehicle gets topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet car, or the other car in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people use the least. Wherever you are in North Carlton or the remainder of Nottinghamshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

North Carlton: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Brick Kiln Wood, perhaps, or midway across North Carlton. No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then switch it off. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the Doncaster By-Pass, under 3 miles from North Carlton, by the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

Hopping across North Carlton to the car park by Parish Centre is one thing; driving towards Doncaster, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. When it's caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in North Carlton

The car remains put, whether that's a street beside St John the Evangelist, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around North Carlton, and our van comes to it. Which fluid got in, about the quantity, and if the engine has turned over: we ask before all else, since those decide the work.

Then the tank is cleared where your car stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains will not flush away by itself. A test of your car comes last, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if needed, replaced. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Lastly, your system is primed with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside Worksop or on a drive around North Carlton. Before we go, our technicians confirm it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in North Carlton

There is no fair single price, since the jobs are not the same. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Carlton Youth Centre.

Which fluid got in, how much, and if the engine ran: every North Carlton call begins by asking exactly those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
