North Ella: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump begins pulling it. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in North Ella. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around North Ella

Things to do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about how much amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a HU10 6 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift the car.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way down Ash Grove.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever North Ella forecourt you are on, the Esso included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Anlaby overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through once your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. By daybreak, a car sitting around North Ella with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's just in that tank, nothing changes. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the BP, and the issue is diluted fuel. Harm only comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Willerby Bottom or the middle of North Ella.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere around East Riding of Yorkshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

North Ella: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. Hurrying, outside Willerby Carr Lane Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the car. After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near Willow Court. One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park by Hop Pole, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere across East Riding of Yorkshire, North Ella as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around North Ella?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Springhead Golf Course, perhaps, or midway across North Ella. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then turn it off. Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M62, under 10 miles from North Ella, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across North Ella to the car park by Willerby Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been run. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted quickly.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around North Ella

Wherever it has stopped in North Ella — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street by Willerby / Wilgardi Statue — our van travels to the car. What got in, about how much, plus whether your engine has been run: we ask before all else, since those decide the work.

Then your tank is drained where the car stands, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Residue from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is bled with fresh diesel. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in North Ella or in a bay at Cottingham. It's tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we head off. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

North Ella and East Riding of Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around North Ella are passed to vans that cover the places around it — Willerby, Wolfreton plus Kirk Ella — and most of East Riding of Yorkshire beyond, across HU postcodes. Phone and check rather than guess if you're close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

North Ella is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in North Ella: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one single price is fair. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight spot behind St. Andrews Church Memorial Hall.

For that in mind, each enquiry from North Ella begins with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if the engine ran — before any quote. Their answers narrow the range down to a single number.

The quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
