AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North End? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave the ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where your car stands in North End. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around North End: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Pull the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Call right where you are. Say a NW3 7 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not do these:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant the ignition goes on, so keep the car off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance up Mountview Close is too far to drive it.
  • Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

At a forecourt around North End, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car away from the pump. On that drive, the vehicle stays exactly where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the pickup sucks from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Hampstead last night and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it's removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow channels. A vehicle left standing around North End with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in North End

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on Gulf's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the whole issue. No harm is done as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once the motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. Whether the vehicle is in Hampstead Garden Suburb or the centre of North End, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around Greater London your vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around North End

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly occurs at home, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Christ Church Primary School, Hampstead the refill is rushed. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Hampstead Way. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Old Bull & Bush, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around North End or the remainder of Greater London you happen to be.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in North End?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. It's been drawn through the filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Golders Hill Park Walled Garden or halfway across North End. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M1, under 3 miles from North End, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across North End to the car park by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner is one thing; driving towards Westminster, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been run. Permanent damage is very rare when it is spotted soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in North End?

The car remains put, whether that's a street beside Michael Ventris, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in North End, and our van travels to it. Three replies decide the job, so first we ask what got in, about the amount, plus if your engine has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue will not wash away unaided. A test of your car follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Hampstead Heath or a drive around North End, that is where our technicians start it and you set off. It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs properly before we go. No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across North End and Greater London

Our teams that answer AdBlue jobs around North End also cover the places round it, Hampstead Heath, Vale of Health and Childs Hill among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the NW postcode area. Phone and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

North End is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in North End?

Every job differs, and so no fixed price would be fair. The price moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind John Linnell and William Blake.

For that in mind, every call from North End begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of any quote. When those are known, a range becomes one firm number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
