North End: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in. In North End, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the vehicle is. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

North End, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the amount, and so do not throw it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PE30 2, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is pointless.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance up Loke Road.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any North End filling station — the Morrisons included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its supply from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in St James End last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around North End makes things worse. In the tank only, time costs nothing. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the JET. Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; running the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Whether your car is in North Lynn or the centre of North End, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere the car has come to rest across Norfolk.

North End: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Usually it's never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Eastgate Academy. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Cresswell Street. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, stopped in the car park outside Bentinck Arms.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels. Anywhere in Norfolk, North End included, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

North End: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Loke Road Park or halfway across North End. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the A1(M), under 50 miles from North End, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across North End to the car park by True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum is a very different job from a run towards Ely, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the car has ended up, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Permanent damage is very rare when it is caught soon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around North End: what it takes

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around North End: a side street close to The Chapel of Saint Nicholas, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the job, so first we ask what got in, roughly the amount, plus if your motor has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't wash away by itself. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Kings Lynn or on a drive in North End. We confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel before leaving. We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

North End: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind 18 Tuesday Market Place.

What went in, how much, and if the engine ran: every North End call begins by asking exactly those, before a figure, never after. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
