AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North Ormesby? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump starts pulling it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where the car stands in North Ormesby. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in North Ormesby: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting TS3 6, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Kings Mews East.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

The attendants on duty at any North Ormesby filling station — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the gases. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Berwick Hills overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in North Ormesby makes it worse. Inside that tank alone, time costs nothing. Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in North Ormesby

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and the problem is thinned fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left in that tank, it causes none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of North Ormesby or out in Brambles Farm, does more harm than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in North Yorkshire your vehicle sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around North Ormesby

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. The refill is hurried outside Lift North Ormesby, because the dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken in. Close to Cromwell Street, someone pours a container in on that drive after work. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Jovial Monk, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, brand-new cars, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known cars see it the most. Same slip, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are around North Ormesby or the rest of North Yorkshire.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in North Ormesby?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Middle Marsh or halfway across North Ormesby. No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the A1(M), under 15 miles from North Ormesby, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Durham, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing North Ormesby to the car park by North Ormesby Market. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

North Ormesby: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around North Ormesby — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Holy Trinity Church — the van travels to the car. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run, because those replies determine the work.

Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because residue will not flush out unaided. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to prime the system on clean diesel. At that point our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Middlesbrough or a driveway around North Ormesby. The test before we head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around North Ormesby

Every job differs, and so no fixed price is honest. What changes the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Saint Alphonsus Church.

With that in mind, every call from North Ormesby opens with the same trio — which fluid was put in, how much, if it ran — ahead of a quote. Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

The quote is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
