AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in North Side? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep your ignition off. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. The trouble begins once it's pulled through your lines — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits around North Side. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, North Side: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops someone turning the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DH3 1, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Bewicke View.
  • Draining that tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

At a forecourt in North Side, whether it is the JET or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the pump. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Blackfell overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it will be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car parked in North Side. Only inside your tank, it stays stable. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in North Side

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Oxclose or the middle of North Side.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has come to rest in Tyne and Wear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around North Side: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can look the same. Nobody intends it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The refill is rushed outside Ravensworth Terrace Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in. Close to Northside, someone tips a container in on the drive after work. Another version: dim light, the car park outside The Three Tuns, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels. Wherever across Tyne and Wear, North Side as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in North Side?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Birtley Grove Park or halfway across North Side. When you safely can, pull over then switch everything off — without turning it on again to see. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the A1(M), under a mile from North Side, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across North Side to the car park by St Josephs is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where the car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. If it's noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

North Side: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road beside Birtley Cenotaph, a drive, a layby or a filling station in North Side, and the van travels to it. The work rests on three replies, which we ask for first — what got in, the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming your system with new diesel comes at the end. After that our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Chester-Le-Street or a drive around North Side. We confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

North Side: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each jobs differ, a single price would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind St John the Evangelist, Birtley.

With that in mind, every enquiry from North Side begins with the same trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before any quote. Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you are told our price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance. While the van is travelling, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
