AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many newer diesels driven around North Thoresby and Ludborough carry a second fluid as well. The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use. That gap is where the error lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in North Thoresby: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Ludborough Road before work, or in the car park outside The New Inn heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Grainsby or the middle of North Thoresby: it is the same few seconds in both.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, on a forecourt around North Thoresby or a drive out in Cadeby. A few seconds, that's all.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Check when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Cleethorpes's car park, perhaps — not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is across Lincolnshire — a routine to follow.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of High Street.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Step five stays off limits.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around North Thoresby?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, JET or another forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear when you ask. On your own drive around North Thoresby? Then your car stays put.

Where the engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off. On the M180, under 25 miles from North Thoresby, that means the next junction. What takes place when our technicians arrive around North Thoresby

Wherever the car has stopped, be it by Lift North Thoresby, beside North Thoresby Methodist Church or on your own drive, our van comes to it. We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies determine this work and the price. That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is drained. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it counts more. The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle. Then our engineers start the car and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
