What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Northend

Everything hinges on one fact: whether the engine has been run after the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Not run yet? Then keep the car like that, wherever the car is — Northend or Finglassie. Leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103; it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Northend. Already run? Stop once safe, then turn it off. Step one stays the same, even if the work is bigger.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Northend forecourt

Imagine it: stood by the pump, holding the bottle, you spot the cap you took off was not the correct one. Somewhere in Northend, then — BP, Morrisons, or anywhere else close by.

Meaning? Finding out on the forecourt is as good as it gets. Still inside the tank, and nothing pulled through: that's where the AdBlue sits.

Next: resist the urge to fire it up only to move away from the petrol pump. Phone us from the forecourt once your car sits in a space — the attendants will lend a hand to push it — and keep the bottle. If it cannot be moved, it can be drained at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

At home in Northend with AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dash had been nagging you. Only by the recycling, the empty container in your hand, did you look back at the cap you'd opened on the driveway. Right off Burnbank Terrace is not different from anywhere.

The upshot: zero driving since leaves this nearly as good to finding it at the petrol pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Next: stop any early-morning drive by putting your keys indoors, then phone us. Thornton or Northend: wherever your driveway sits, that's where it is cleared. Night-time clears outside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Northend?

Rough running, smoke, falling power or a lit dashboard arrived a mile or two beyond the top-up. Donald Crescent, say, or the way to Dunfermline — a run of under 15 miles.

What it means: the system has pulled the AdBlue in. It has been through the fuel filter and the fuel lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure pump and your injectors. Every restart, like every mile, carries it deeper.

Your move: pull up anywhere safe, then turn the engine off. Exit at the first junction — not the services further along — if you're on the M90, under 10 miles from Northend. It will not have cleared, and so there's no point starting it again to check. Let us know the distance covered when you call.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

A week ago, the car was unknown to you. Your own motor either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, so no one told you the AdBlue cap was just beside the diesel. Wherever you are around Fife, every motorist can slip up.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. Plenty of hire and company agreements want the owner to approve work on your car.

Next: phone the hire company or your fleet manager first, then us — settling it before our arrival is faster. If you're stranded in the car park outside Glenrothes with Thornton, or by Markinch & Thornton Parish Church, whilst you wait for an answer, leave your car off.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Northend?

"I think so" is often the most honest answer there is. A slight ammonia-like whiff hangs around your filler, the bottle seems too light, and the cap you took off is hard to recall. Maybe on a friend's drive in Coaltown of Balgonie, or in a rush outside the local primary school on the school run.

The upshot: the engine isn't hurt by a little AdBlue splashed around the filler. Once it is inside your diesel tank, though, it does. Firing up the vehicle cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will draw it in.

What to do: treat it as if it was put in. Do not crank it. Call us and describe what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in every Northend AdBlue drain

Every case has the same opening to the work. Filling station, driveway, Station Hotel's car park or a street by War Memorial — our van reaches the vehicle, and three questions come next: what liquid, what quantity, and if it ran. Replies set the job; the quote follows on the call whilst nobody has set off yet.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some metals used in fuel systems, and so it does not rinse out on its own; that's why the flush, after the drain, counts far more here than with petrol. Finally are the filter, cleaned or replaced if necessary; fresh diesel; and a check of your car. If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

The last step is firing it up. Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. Lasting damage is very rare if it's spotted soon, and the entire job is done where the car is. Nothing is taken upfront, settlement is made on the day, and you get what your insurer wants: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. It is worth knowing: lots of insurers include misfuelling cover, so a quick look at your documents as we travel is worthwhile.

AdBlue drains round Northend and across Fife

Over KY postcodes, the vans serving Northend — a residential suburb — work surrounding places as well, Stenton and Eastfield among them. A postcode starting KY1 4 is the quickest way to tell us where you are.

Whether the vehicle is on a lay-by on the way to Thornton Memorial Park or in a car park in the middle of Northend, it doesn't need to move. Our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits. Phone and ask instead of guessing when you are by Thornton Town Hall, near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain.
