AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Northenden? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. The harm begins once it's pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Northenden. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Northenden: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting M22 4, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Never do these:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch down Kingsley Road.
  • Draining the tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

On a forecourt around Northenden, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. On that drive, your car stays just as it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. From a dedicated tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what your motor emits. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Benchill last night and never started stays the simple one, as long as nobody touches your key.

Once it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches until it's removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting till morning in Northenden leaves it worse. In your tank alone, time does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in the tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Wythenshawe or the middle of Northenden.

As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever in Greater Manchester the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northenden: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. A bottle picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Northenden Community School the refill is rushed. Close to Kenworthy Lane, someone tips a container in at home after work. One more pattern: dim light, the car park outside Northenden Untapped, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It happens most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical slip, an identical first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Northenden or the remainder of Greater Manchester.

Northenden: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Northenden Village Green, say, or part way across Northenden. No restarting to check: stop when it is safe, then turn everything off. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M60, under a mile from Northenden, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Northenden to the car park by Northenden Players Theatre Club is a very different job from a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. When it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

Northenden: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A road beside Northenden Social Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Northenden, we travel to it. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, since those answers settle the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. A test of the car comes last, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, your system is bled with clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Northenden or in a space at Gatley. The check before our engineers head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Northenden lies approximately 5 miles south of Manchester city centre and is surrounded by other suburban areas such as Northern Moor and Sharston. Northenden and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Northenden also cover the locations round it, Northern Moor, Sharston and West Didsbury among them, and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across the M postcode area. Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

No moving is needed. In Northenden, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northenden: the cost of fixing it

There is no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Wilfrid.

For that reason, each enquiry from Northenden opens by asking the identical trio — what got in, how much, whether it ran — before any figure. When those are known, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
