Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Northfield

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave the ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through the pump — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Northfield. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Northfield

Do these:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which product, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.
  • Ring just where you are. Say a TA6 7 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not do these:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Switching the key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Even a short stretch up Northfield is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

On a forecourt around Northfield, whether it is the Morrisons or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. On your own drive, do not move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

It does not combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Wembdon last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it's pulled in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside. By daybreak, a car sitting in Northfield with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is only inside the tank, nothing changes. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Northfield

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. Mixed into the diesel and left still, it is no threat at that stage; running the motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Eastover or the centre of Northfield alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Somerset the car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Northfield

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. A container bought while heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Westover Green Community School and Autism Centre the top-up is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off West Street. One more pattern: dim light, the car park by The Horse & Jockey, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types. Wherever around Somerset, Northfield included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Northfield?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been sucked through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from St Matthews Field or halfway across Northfield. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Northfield sits under 3 miles from the M5; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system. That's why a hop across Northfield to park near Westfield United Reformed Church and a drive of under 25 miles towards Wells are very distinct jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Northfield?

A road beside Somerset Space Walk - Pluto, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Northfield, our engineers come to it. The work depends on three replies, which our engineers ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the motor has not run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the system on clean diesel. At that point we start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space outside Bridgwater or a driveway around Northfield. The test before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on new diesel. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

AdBlue drains in Northfield and across Somerset

Bridgwater, Newtown and Hamp are among the towns near Northfield that the same teams reach, together with much of Somerset beyond, over the TA postcode area. Ring and check instead of guessing if you're by a border, or anywhere awkward to explain.

A van that comes to you fits Northfield, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the car to us, since we empty it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

Northfield: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no fair single price, since the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Bridgwater Town Hall.

For that reason, every enquiry from Northfield opens by asking the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, if it ran — before a figure. Those answers shrink the range down to one figure.

The quote is given during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it. Keys out; engine and ignition off. Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether it ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Somerset, Northfield too.
