AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Northowram? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Northowram. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Northowram: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting HX3 7, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Towngate.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

At a forecourt in Northowram, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump. On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, which is how a car filled in Lower Shelf last night and not switched on stays the simple case, as long as nobody touches the key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight around Northowram leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, time costs nothing. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Coley or the centre of Northowram alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across West Yorkshire the car has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Northowram

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. The refill gets hurried outside Northowram Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in. Someone tips the container in outside their house, just off Northowram Green, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Shoulder of Mutton.

Hired motors, new cars, company vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it switched off — wherever you are around Northowram or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Northowram?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, perhaps midway across Northowram or coming back from Northowram Recreation Ground. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M606, under 5 miles from Northowram, at the first junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Northowram to park near Northowram Church and a drive of under 5 miles for Bradford are such distinct jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Permanent damage is very unusual when it's caught early.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Northowram

A road beside St John the Baptist, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest around Northowram, our engineers travel to it. The work rests on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid went in, the amount, and if the engine has run.

Next, draining that tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol. Next, your filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the motor has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the system is bled with clean diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside Halifax or a drive in Northowram, that is where our technicians start it and you head off. It is tested on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we go. No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northowram: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat figure would be fair, because every job is different. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Old Brodleians RUFC.

That's why every call from Northowram starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
