AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Nungate: What Now?

Has the motor turned over since the AdBlue got in? That one question decides almost everything about what comes next. Over in Black House Steading or right around Nungate, an unstarted motor must remain that way. Normally that means emptying and thoroughly flushing it right there around Nungate — and so leave your key and engine off then phone 0333 366 0103. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.

Wherever in East Lothian it took place, one of the situations below fits yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Nungate forecourt

You're at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Somewhere around Nungate, then — JET, Shell, or anywhere else close by.

The upshot: of every spot to find out, this is the best. No pump has drawn it in, and so the AdBlue stays only inside that tank.

Clearing the pump is no excuse to run it — so do not get back in. Phone us from the forecourt after your car is in a bay — the staff will help roll it — and save the bottle. The equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a live forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed away gets emptied right at the pump.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Nungate

The warning light had been on for days. A bottle from the shop, emptied in at the drive — and it was just by the bin that the cap caught a second look. Homes just off Whittinghame Drive are caught out as much as everywhere else.

Put simply: if your vehicle hasn't moved since, it's nearly equal to spotting it at the forecourt. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of that tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

Next: prevent an early drive by putting your keys in the house, then phone us. In Hailes Terrace or right here around Nungate, the drain happens at your drive. Night-time empties beside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel around Nungate?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Perhaps it was on Lennox Road, possibly on the way out towards Edinburgh, under 25 miles away.

The upshot: the system has drawn AdBlue in already. Mileage decides how deep it goes: filter and lines first, then the high-pressure pump and each injector. It goes further with each extra mile covered and every restart.

Next: find a sensible spot, stop, and turn your motor off. Service stations further along are too far: from the M8, under 25 miles out of Nungate, take the next junction. Don't restart the vehicle to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Phone us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

You have just had this vehicle a week. Unknown to you, the two fillers are next to each other here — unlike your own vehicle, which has none or keeps it elsewhere. It can happen to anyone, anywhere around East Lothian.

In short: an extra step on top of the cases above, which turn on whether it's run. Work on your vehicle often needs the owner's approval under hire or fleet terms.

Settling it before we turn up is faster, so ring the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. Stranded by CWGC Cross of Sacrifice or at Drem until the firm replies, the car stays switched off the whole time.

Nungate: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Honestly, the only answer might be that you think it did. What cap came off, you can't recall; but the bottle weighs lighter than expected, and ammonia lingers by your filler. Maybe it happened in a hurry at the school gates at the local primary school, or on a friend's drive in Morham.

Put simply: a spill near the filler does the motor unharmed. If it's inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Starting the car won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it would suck it in.

Assume it was put in, and never start the key. Checking a tank that proves clean beats draining one once it has been run — so phone then describe to us what you saw.

Nungate: what every AdBlue drain has in common

The job opens identically, whichever your situation. Three things come once our technicians arrive — at a filling station, a drive, a road beside Normandy Memorial Garden or the car park at The Golf Tavern: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the motor has run. Answers set the work; the quote comes on the call whilst no one has left yet.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a careful flush — more important after urea than with petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear on their own, no matter how long it sits. Next comes the fuel filter — cleaned, or replaced when necessary — then fresh diesel, and a test of the vehicle. Where your engine has not been started, expect roughly half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

The last step is starting the car. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our engineers check it is running properly, and then we head off. When it is spotted early, the car very seldom has lasting damage, and the entire job happens where it is. Payment comes that day, never in advance. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer. Dig out your insurance while we arrive: cover for misfuelling is included in plenty of policies.
